CENTENNIAL BEACH PICNIC SHELTERS
This project involved the careful siting, design and servicing of two new picnic shelters, as part of the Centennial Beach Redevelopment Plan. With views of the adjacent marshlands, the shelters are a new amenity for bird watching and a rest stop for families using the beach and playground. An innovative problem solving approach to the structural design was required to realize the architectural concept, the result of which is evident in the completed picnic shelters. Using locally made cross-laminated timber for the roof of the shelters, Wicke Herfst Maver Consulting Inc. developed a unique CLT moment connection using locally available steel plate fasteners. This connection detail enabled the roof to span in two-directions between supports, maintaining the strong, thin profile desired by the architect.
